Well, I was so excited to eat here as I was searching for vegan restaurants... Anyway, I had the avocado toast... It's not sliced avocado it's like a goopy watering processed avocado... Very bland. It came on a plate with a very dirty fork and knife with icing and food all over them. So, not such a good impression. The service though was excellent and happy .. the atmosphere is good overall. My husband had the meat and potatoes wrap.and says it was good but expensive. Cost for avocado toast 9.50, tea $4.00 wrap was $14.00 So, I took my utensils in and ask the cashier to look at them and said this is how they were given to me ..she smiled and said okay thanks. I said no it's not good they are filthy she said okay thanks we will wash them anyway. I said I would hope so? Totally confused. 😂 So, I will never eat here again because of that reaction and reply.
The sandwiches are tasty but everything is overpriced. Two sandwiches and one drink was $39. The service has been subpar at best during each visit. On more than one occasion, the cashier taking our order didn’t greet us or offer any helpful insight on the menu. It was more of a blank stare inviting us to step forward and start ordering.
Eaten here for breakfast several times over the years. Excellent breakfast options including health-conscious, vegetarian and vegan (but also great sausage and egg sandwiches!) Great coffee/espresso drinks, but a note of caution to make sure you give them a minute to cool - I scalded my tongue last time in my haste to get into my latte! Overall very reliable, only caution is not to be in a hurry. It’s a small place and they get bogged down with breakfast fish pretty easily. That said the food was worth the wait!
My husband & I visited The Local for the 1st time on a day trip from Williamsburg. Upon entering we were greeted by staff behind the counter but also met with obnoxious rap music, the opposite atmosphere we expected. We were not asked if it was our first time or if we needed help. We asked a question about the soup of the day & the staff didn’t know (not a good sign) so yelled back to the kitchen for an answer. We placed our order & then moved tables trying to find a quieter spot. We sat in a window seat with a nice table & cushions. We found dead flies littering the window seat & then, in the 10-15 mins of waiting for our order, we killed half a dozen more flies buzzing about our heads & the window. I know staff saw us struggling & one commented though not sure if she was amused or embarrassed- she didn’t offer a solution or apology. Our food arrived & I found barely a quarter cup of chicken salad on my”fresh local plate”- it’s the smallest portion I’ve ever seen. The chicken salad was over salted but mixed into the greens was palatable. Once I attempted to mix in the chicken salad, I discovered it was covering up spring mix that was past it’s prime & turning rotten- I had to pick out a quarter of the greens & also found a rotten blueberry & strawberry. The dressing was fine & without trying to be rude, I attempted to eat the rest without dissecting it further. This salad was $14.50 which I found a huge ask for the quality & portion. The advertised “house made chicken salad” clearly utilized premade grilled chicken breast- I’ve previously had chicken roasted & prepared in house equating to proper “homemade chicken salad” so that was disappointing. My husband’s sandwich was ok but no staff member followed up to see if our food was ok, ask if we needed anything…and they were standing a few feet away with a clear view of our table…and there were only 2 other people eating in the cafe during our meal. I really wanted to love this place & went out of the way to support a local small business but was completely unimpressed & disappointed by such a mediocre & unwelcoming experience. I could’ve enjoyed a bowl packed with more protein, vegetables & toppings for much less money at Cava- sometimes supporting a small business is a total bust & sadly that was our experience at The Local. Hope mgmt makes changes to improve the experience- it could’ve been 5 stars with some attention to detail & excellence.
My wife and I love this place. We went both days we were in town. Much more than a standard coffee shop, excellent food made to order (gluten free offerings for those with allergies), coffee drinks, and merch!
A charming, welcoming & your best breakfast/lunch restaurant in Irvington, VA. Here, the great staff know their regular customers, serve the freshest foods to order as you sip on delicious coffee. We enjoyed The Local so much that we returned each day of our stay nearby. While you wait for your delicious breakfast or lunch (best chicken salad ever!) browse through a book from their new "Book Club" selection. Highly recommend: Salmon on bagel, Chicken with salad, Breakfast egg, sausage sandwich. They will also pack for to take on the road. This establishment has a mission statement as a gathering place, gallery to support local artist, opportunity & fair staff wages, maintain environmentally sustainable presence when possible while delivering quality coffee & freshest ingredients. Bravo to The Local!
This place is great! It really is a local gem. The food is great with local ingredients (as possible). The coffee is amazing. What really struck me was how friendly the owner was and how adorable the decor is. I love the local artisan goods for sale - art, skin cream, and more. Will definitely be back.
The atmosphere is so warm and inviting, it really makes you feel like a local even though you may just be passing through! The food is delicious and served with a welcoming smile! I can't wait to come back and enjoy a cup of coffee and an avocado toast with the other "locals"!
